The sheriff’s words echoed in Benjamin’s ears.

“This guy was hanged?” He repeated what the sheriff had said, just to make sure he hadn’t misunderstood.

“That’s what it looks like based on the marks on his neck bones.”

“Just like the man I saw on the night I was abducted.”

The sheriff raised his hand. “Now, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.”

She narrowed her eyes, obviously not appreciating being dismissed.

“Maybe you can answer this then,” Lindsey continued, a new hardness to her voice. “Did this guy have a record?”

The sheriff shook his head. “I can’t say he did. He was pretty quiet. Didn’t cause much trouble.”

“He just ran a computer shop?” Benjamin clarified.

“That’s right. He didn’t get much business around here, but he seemed to like it here.”

“Was he local?” Benjamin continued.

“He moved here in his twenties. Lived alone. Not many friends.”

“I see. I appreciate you sharing that information.” Lindsey straightened as if trying to pull herself together.

“Of course. I knew you’d want to know.”

“What happens next?” Lindsey continued.

“We’ve already located his next of kin—an aunt is his only living relative. She’d lost touch for so long that she just assumed he’d started a new life somewhere else. Now we’ll launch an investigation into what happened to him.”

“I’m glad to hear that.”

The sheriff nodded slowly. “Anyway, I need to be running. My schedule is suddenly getting very full.”

“I’ll walk you out,” Benjamin said.

Something flashed in the sheriff’s gaze, but he remained quiet. He simply nodded and let Benjamin walk him toward the door.

Benjamin wanted to talk to the sheriff and ask a few more questions.

Because he still didn’t trust this man. There was something about the man Benjamin couldn’t put his finger on . . . but whatever it was bothered him.

The sheriff stepped into the sunlight outside and paced toward his car, which was parked at the front of the inn.

“You have something on your mind?” Sheriff Ross cut straight to the chase.

“As a matter of fact, I do. I’m curious. Were you in town on the night that Lindsey was abducted? I can’t remember.”

The sheriff turned to him, more unreadable emotions dancing in his gaze. “I’m not really sure why you’re asking or what you’re getting at. But, no, I wasn’t. I was at my uncle’s funeral, and I came back the next day.”

Benjamin stored that information at the back of his mind.

So maybe the sheriff wasn’t involved with Lindsey’s abduction.

“I’m glad I have a moment alone with you,” the sheriff said. “Because I’ve been meaning to ask you if you remember meeting me when you were younger.”

Heat spread through his limbs. “Of course.”

“I was the one who arrested your dad.”

“I know.”

“You could have some hard feelings toward me, I realize. Feelings that may taint how you see things now.”

“I don’t know about that.” Benjamin felt himself bristling.

“The thing is . . . there’s something about you that seems different.”

His breath caught. “What are you saying?”

“I ran your plates.”

His spine tightened even more. “And?”

“The vehicle is registered to you. But I just have this feeling you’re not telling the truth about something.
